What is AEO? A guide to Answer Engine Optimization
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) explained: how to win featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice answers with answer-first writing, lists, tables and schema.
Short answer
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so search features and assistants can lift a direct answer from it — featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and AI answer panels. The core technique is to phrase a heading as a question and answer it plainly in the first 40–60 words beneath it.
Where do answer engines show answers?
Direct answers appear in Google featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes, Bing answer cards, knowledge panels, voice assistants such as Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant, and the AI answer panels of Google, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
| Surface | Typical format | Best page element |
|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet | Paragraph, list or table | Question heading + 40–60 word answer |
| People Also Ask | Short paragraph | Clear sub-question H2/H3 with direct answer |
| Voice assistants | One spoken sentence or two | Concise, self-contained first sentence |
| Knowledge panel | Entity facts | Organization schema + consistent profiles |
| AI answer panels | Synthesised summary with links | Quotable facts, tables, cited sources |
How do I write content that answer engines can quote?
Use the answer-first pattern: put the question in a heading, answer it completely in one or two plain sentences directly underneath, then add detail, examples and evidence below.
- Phrase the heading the way a person would ask it: “How long does a UK visit visa take?”
- Answer in the first sentence. Repeat the key noun from the question so the answer stands alone out of context.
- Keep that first answer to roughly 40–60 words — a common practitioner rule of thumb, not an official limit.
- Follow with a list, table or steps for detail.
- Cover one question per section so each answer can be extracted cleanly.
Which structured data helps with AEO?
FAQPage, QAPage, HowTo, Article, BreadcrumbList and Organization schema help machines understand questions, answers and who is giving them. Use schema only for content that is visible on the page.
| Schema type | Use it for | Google rich result today |
|---|---|---|
| FAQPage | A list of questions and answers you wrote | Removed for all sites (May 2026); still valid schema.org |
| QAPage | One question with user-submitted answers (forums) | Yes, for genuine Q&A pages |
| HowTo | Step-by-step instructions | Deprecated in 2023 |
| Article | Guides, news, blog posts | Yes — supports author and date display |
| BreadcrumbList | Page position in site hierarchy | Yes |
| Speakable | Sections suited to text-to-speech | Beta, news publishers, US English only |
Even where Google no longer shows a visual rich result, the same markup is still read by Bing and by AI systems that parse pages, and it costs nothing to keep accurate.
How do I find the questions people are asking?
Collect real questions from Google’s People Also Ask boxes, the query report in Search Console, “related searches”, your sales and support inbox, and forums where your customers talk.
- Search Console → Performance → filter queries containing who, what, when, how, why, can, does.
- Expand People Also Ask boxes for your main topics — each click reveals more questions.
- Ask your sales and support staff for the ten questions they answer every week.
- Group questions by topic and give each group one page; give each question one section.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO is a specialisation within SEO. SEO gets a page ranked; AEO shapes the content on that page so a search feature or assistant can quote the answer directly.
Does FAQ schema still work?
Not in Google. Google restricted FAQ rich results to government and health websites in 2023 and removed them for all sites in May 2026. FAQPage is still valid schema.org, other engines and parsers can still read it, and it does no harm when it matches visible content.
How long should a direct answer be?
A common practitioner guideline is 40–60 words for the first answer paragraph. There is no official limit; what matters is that the answer is complete and makes sense on its own.
Do zero-click answers hurt my traffic?
Some simple questions are answered without a click. In exchange you gain visibility and brand recall, and people with deeper needs still click through. Focus AEO on questions that lead naturally to your product or service.
